Master Gardener Program

The Master Gardeners program is designed to use the services of trained volunteers who have horticultural knowledge and a willingness to share that knowledge with other county residents through the Cooperative Extension Service. The program was initiated in 1972 in Seattle and has spread to over 45 states. The West Virginia University Master Gardener program got its start in 1993. Morgan County conducts a Master Gardener training class each year. Master Gardeners must complete the class and contribute at least 30 volunteer hours to become certified.

The Master Gardener Program and Training are conducted by the West Virginia University Extension Service through the County Extension office. Specialized training provides gardeners the opportunity to improve their horticultural knowledge and skills. Certified Master Gardeners then share their expertise with the public through organized volunteer activities.

The program is more than a horticulture class or a garden club. It is a volunteer and personal growth program that enables participants to increase their knowledge of horticulture while development communication, management, and leadership skills.
